Mexican

Mexican

The game of ‘Mexican’ or,  as some call it, ‘Mexicans’ is a dice game with its roots in games such as “Liar’s Poker” or “Bluff”.

dice

The game itself is quite simple.

To play ‘Mexican’ all that is needed is a set of two dice (preferably from a Yahtzee game), a cup, a half-filled glass of beer and a keg from which to fill that glass. The first player puts the dice in the cup, shakes the cup and then brings the cup down on the table so that the dice are contained within the cup. The player then raises the cup just enough so that they can see the upward facing numbers on the dice that represent their ‘score’ – while keeping the score concealed from the next player.  The player then says his score aloud and passes the cup to the player next to him.  In order to proceed, the next player must beat the score of the previous player.  So if player one’s roll is a 6 and a 1, he calls out “sixty-one”.  The next player has two choices.  he can believe his opponent and roll the dice, or he can lift the cup to see the dice.  If he chooses to roll, he must tie or beat sixty-one with his roll, he then pass the turn to the next player.  If the player does not believe his opponent and lifts the cup, one of two things happens.  If the opponent is shown to be lying, he consumes.  If the opponent was telling the truth, the player that lifted the cup has to consume.

Scoring

The numbers resulting from the roll of the dice have been designated with names. Some scores, such as 2-1 (“Mexican”) are part of the common game, other scores have names that are part of ANW lore such as 5-4…”Bill Rose”. In addition the rolling of certain scores can elicit singing from a ANW brother. In the case a ‘2-1’ roll the singing of ‘la cucaracha‘ is an acceptable song of celebration.

  • 2-1 “Mexican”  – The highest score. Mexican beats anything.
  • 3-1 “Social” – When a 31 is rolled, the player that rolls it lifts the cup, calls “SOCIAL” and everyone takes a dwink of whatever they are consuming at the time.  The same player then starts play again with “Fresh” dice.
  • 3-2 “Reverse” – When 32 is rolled, the player lifts the cup, calls “Reverse” and rolls again, this time passing the cup to the opponent in the other direction.  Again, this is considered a “fresh” roll.
  • 5-4 “Bill Rose”  Nothing special, just a boring, risk-free, middle of the road score.
  • 6-6 “Boxcars” – Doubles beat any non-double roll except Mexican.  Boxcars is the highest Doubles roll.
  • 5-5 “Tits in the window”
  • 4-4 “Window panes”
  • 3-3 “Gulls”
  • 2-2 “Ducks”
  • 1-1 “Snake eyes”

Notes:

1. How  a player gets the dice and the cup onto the table varies. Style can be important such as tossing the cup in the air or using other players as part of the process. Regardless of how the dice are shaken one rule must be observed..that is the dice CANNOT hit the floor. “Sloppy Dice”  results in a penalty.  (see ANW Rules).
